SANT JOAN
1/Fireworks at Barceloneta2/Bonfire at Barceloneta3/The day after Sant Joan
This upcomming Sunday its the Feast of Sant Joan in Barcelona. The celebrations is on the 23 of June each year but the actual feast day is on the 24 of June.
The Feast of Sant Joan celebrates the start of the summer and it is the longest day of the year.
It is one of the most important feast days for the Spanish people and is celebrated throughout Barcelona city. The idea is that on the night of Sant Joan the sun reaches its highest point, before beginning to drop again. For the Spanish people the sun is seen as a symbol of fertility and wealth and so it must be given strength. The strength is provided by bonfires and fireworks lit throughout the city for Sant Joan.
Me and James are going to a Barbecue party with friends. After the BBQ we all are going to Barceloneta Beach to look at all the bonfires, the amazing fireworks and probably also to do a little fireworks ourself.
I’m used to celebrating SanktHans in Denmark the 23rd of June and now that I am “Catalunya” I can’t wait to celebrate Sant Joan.
