Happy Thanksgiving (28th November 2013)

FLAHERTYSYesterday I had a very happy Thanksgiving at Flaherty´s Irish Pub Barcelona.

Yummm….. The Thanksgiving menu was delicious and Flaherty’s was full of happy Americans, I would guess that every American living in Barcelona was there. It had a nice feeling and great vibe.

Flaherty’s did an amazing tasty Thanksgiving menu for 12,50/euro per person.

The starter was a spicy pumpkin/potato soup.

Main dish was a traditional Thanksgiving roast turkey with home style stuffing, mashed sweet potatoes, candied yams, broccoli, braised carrots, brown gravy and lot´s of cranberry sauce.

For dessert we had apple pie served with whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. Yumm!

Included in the menu was a bottle of red Rioja Crianza wine.

We went to Flaherty’s after doing a little shopping in town so we didn´t get the time to book a table, but luckily for us they somehow created us a nice little romantic spot at the bar with a candle and they did a gluten free menu especially for me, 🙂

Now that’s what I call a surplus and flexible staff and great service.

P.S. They told us that they do a Sunday Roast every Sunday, so if you are in Barcelona and feel like a nice roast on a Sunday, then this is the place to go.

P.P.S. Flaherty’s is also a good place to arrange your Christmas dinner or celebrate New Years. I noticed that they also have plenty of drink specials. I will definitely go back with Mr. J. ♥♥♥♥♥

Have a fantastic Friday night 🙂

Cosy crackling and warming fireplace

My big sister and her little family just bought a house and they have a fireplace in their new living room.

It would be a lie to say that I´m not just a little jealous…

I grew up in a home with two beautiful fireplaces and there’s nothing like on a cold winter day to enjoy a hot cup of chocolate in front of the cosy crackling and warming fireplace. Those things go hand in hand; winter, fireplace, cosyness and hot chocolate 🙂

I also want a fireplace and I wouldn’t mind if it looked like one of the examples below.

Now I will go to bed and dream of nice little cozy homes with crackling wood burning in their fireplaces…

Good night from Barcelona

Popeye Spinach Soup with a boild egg

spinachPopeye -Spinach soup with a boild egg

Some days ago we had this filling, warming and rich spinach soup. The soup was delicious and I tell you this soup gives energy …kind of the same energy as Popeye get´s when he eats spinach !

Recipe:
4 servings

2 shallots, finely chopped
1 clove of garlic
10-20 g of butter (you can also use oil)
500 g  of frozen spinach
150 g of greek yoghurt
100 ml of white wine
1000 ml veggie or chicken broth
1 red chili (tiny)
pepper
salt
2 eggs

In a large pot, fry the shallots, garlic, spinach and chili in butter till translucent.  Add the white wine and fry for 5 min, until the alcohol is gone, then add the broth and bring to a boil.  Let it simmer for 10-15 min.

Put the spinach and some of the liquid in your blender and blend till smooth.  Return the soup to the pot, put in the greek yoghurt and season with salt and pepper and keep warm.

Put the eggs in boiling water and let boil for 8 minutes, then remove from the heat and run under very cold water to stop the cooking process.  Peel them carefully and cut them in two.

Pour the hot soup in a plate and put half a egg in each plate, season with pepper, garnish with chopped chives or fresh spinach and serve immediately. popeye1A

Have a great Tuesday night !

1 Month to Christmas

Christmas Eve

Jul Fam 1jul fam 3jul fam 2

Christmas Eve is celebrated in different ways around the world, varying by country and region. Elements common to many areas of the world include the attendance of special religious observances such as a midnight Mass or Vespers, and the giving and receiving of presents.

In particular that part about the presents is a much loved tradition in Denmark. Who doesn’t love to give presents and especially to receive presents from people you love????…..

In a traditional Danish Christmas eve the food is also very important. The Christmas eve dinner is eaten with the family. It usually consists of roast pork, roast duck with potatoes, caramelized potatoes, red cabbage and plenty of homemade brown gravy. For dessert we have risalamande, a cold rice pudding dish which is served with a hot cherry sauce, traditionally with a almond hidden inside. The lucky finder of this almond is entitled to a small gift that normally is a small marzipan pig. In some families, it’s tradition that the rice pudding dessert is made with the remaining rice porridge from the previous evening, a meal served on the 23rd, Lille juleaften (Little Christmas Eve), with cinnamon, brown sugar and butter. It is eaten warm with a fruit drink or sweet malt beer.

At Christmas eve after the meal is complete, the family will dance around the Juletræ (fir tree) and sing Christmas carols and hymns like “Nu er det jul igen” (Now it is Christmas again) and “Et barn er født i Bethlehem” (A child has been born in Bethlehem). When the singing is complete, presents which are tucked under the tree, are handed out by the children or in turn. After the presents have been opened the children and everybody with a childish mind are playing with their presents that they received, while the rest of us adults are having a good time in each others company and while we are eating more Christmas snacks.

In my family we always sit on the sofas in front of the fireplace and we have fun and enjoy each others company and eat, eat and eat 😉

Because we in my family (and all other Danish families) eat quite a lot of Christmas food on Christmas Eve, then we have a tradition for a long and nice walk the day after Christmas eve. My mom says it’s so we can walk some of the Christmas fat off. Hehe.

These photos above is from last year, Christmas 2012.

… But this year, exactly in 1 month I’m for the first time in my life not in my family’s company at Christmas eve. I am with my love J and his awesome family, and we are going to have a traditional Aussie Christmas with accompanying summer, sun, beach, BBQ, drinks and of course presents.

Uh, I can´t wait and I feel all of a sudden as an independent adult, having to spend Christmas without my mom and dad and my two sisters, hehe.

The story goes that Santa replaces his reindeers for kangaroos when he arrives to Australia, when we get back home from the land downunder then I’ll tell you if the story is true.. Hohohohoooo mate!!

Them Burgers

Burger A Classic Gluten-free Burger with sesame bun, beef steak, salad, fried egg and a lot´s of yellow onions

IMG_7020A Gluten-free Blue Cheese Burger made with a mix of everything from the fridge. I added blue cheese inside of the burger beef´s before I fried them. The blue cheese gave the otherwise very ordinary burgers a little fine extra taste.

I simply love burgers and just because I have Celiac disease (Gluten allergy) it doesn’t mean that I can’t eat burgers. In my home we just make them a little alternative.

For me the burger is a all year meal, it goes good in every season.
Now these days in the autumn/early winter I like to spice the burgers up, for example serving them with sweet potato chili fries, or use a strong blue cheese instead of normal burger cheese, use a tasty garlic/avocado guacamole spread or maybe by adding some chili and paprika in the ketch-up, etc.

Only the imagination puts limits!

J and I are planning to go for a brunch at a new cafe just opened in town this weekend, and who knows maybe there´s burgers on the menu. I have heard they serve good gluten-free brunches, yumm …

Enjoy your Friday 🙂
